I, too, grew up in a large family of very limited means. My Dad was self employed and my Mom took care of the kids, and the house and the business books. She did wonders feeding 9 children on not very much money. We ate A LOT of potatoes and noodles. The joke in our family is the time she made tuna hot dish and forgot to include the one can of tuna that usually went into it, and nobody noticed. But I think back on that and think of how hard she and Dad worked to keep us fed and clothed and how they must have worried at times.

I cook almost everything from scratch and we don't eat as much meat as a lot of people, and I know our grocery bill is very reasonable, but I have the luxury of knowing that I can eat anything I want and run to the store any time I want and that goes a long way toward helping me enjoy what's in front of me at any given time.

Thank you for sharing your experience and your insights.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4991540126842168343.post-78783339216701290002011-11-20T12:20:39.651-06:002011-11-20T12:20:39.651-06:00God luck. But homeless is tougher because you buy more expensive, ready-to-eat stuff. I'm assuming you'll cheat and have some meals elsewhere.. I'll spend 15 food stamps on a good meal sometimes. But here is a tip.. Black beans and raman noodles, mix with high nutrition spices. If you eat 1 meal a day, 30 bucks can get you maybe 20 meals. Almost a month! Hey, wish me luck too. I'm down to 40 bucks until the tenth of December. I was depressed and said screw my budget, I'm getting a big meal. I'm trying not to buy more supplies for another 10 days..Rayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11956356053427943308noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4991540126842168343.post-3756709732194241102011-11-17T13:10:03.806-06:002011-11-17T13:10:03.806-06:00Hi Jeanne,

Information like this is a great way to show that it is possible to eat organic, from a co-op -- on a budget.

That being said, there is one major thing you should add to your disclaimer: being vegetarian. The vast majority of Americans are unwilling to eat a vegetarian diet. Most don't understand that you can have a diet high in protein without meat. That same trip for a meat eater would be MUCH more expensive.

I do appreciate organic foods because yes, less herbicide/pesticide pollution is a good thing and common sense tells me that I'll be better off eating natural products rather than genetically modified ones. However, my girlfriend and I are both vegetarian but do not shop at a co-op/eat organic. We spend a total of 125-150 a MONTH on all of our food needs - half of what you would end up spending going the organic/co-op route.

Food for thought.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4991540126842168343.post-53447707208778044062011-09-27T04:38:56.904-05:002011-09-27T04:38:56.904-05:00. If you really want to make soup you need other vegetables and possibly a starch. Add in another 2 dollars (although I am sure in most soups it would be more) and you have consumed 1/4 of your budget for the week. I think the writer that commented about the whole chicken might want to take the SNAP challange themselves before making such assumptions.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4991540126842168343.post-92117612344494653232010-11-24T14:14:30.657-06:002010-11-24T14:14:30.657-06:00I am not understanding the notion that someone usi...I am not understanding the notion that someone using SNAP cannot cook from scratch.....
Buying a whole chicken on sale for $3.99 and making soup from scratch is do-able no matter what method of payment you use at the check out.
The difference is the amount of time people want to devote to the decisions they make about which foods they put in their body.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
